Import holdings from Schwab

Use a Schwab Positions CSV for one account while excluding summary rows and normalizing its cash position.

The Schwab importer turns one account export into a reviewed account update

A Schwab Positions CSV describes one account and includes presentation rows that are not holdings. YARCalc uses the introductory account line to label the preview, excludes the Positions Total row, and treats the Cash & Cash Investments amount as one-dollar cash units.

The purpose of import is to reduce transcription while preserving review. Format detection tells you that YARCalc recognized the layout; it does not prove that every security, basis amount, or asset class is ready for a retirement projection.

Resolve missing basis and destination questions before import

Export the current Positions CSV without removing its introductory line or changing the column headers. Open the importer for the matching saved account and confirm that the owner and tax type are correct.

A taxable holding with missing cost basis should be corrected or excluded when it could affect gains and withdrawal taxes. Negative or malformed positions are not valid planning holdings. If the preview total or row count cannot be reconciled, stop instead of relying on the file’s grand-total line.

Use merge for a partial selection. Choose replacement only after confirming that the selected rows are the complete account and that removing unmatched YARCalc holdings is intended.

Read the add, update, keep, and remove counts before saving

Select the file, confirm Schwab format detection, and review each proposed name, symbol, quantity, market value, and total cost basis. Confirm the cash row appears once and that the Positions Total row is not being treated as a security.

Choose the positions to import and read the exact effect of merge or replacement. The preview should tell you which holdings will be added, updated, retained, or removed. Save only when those counts describe the intended account.

Schwab labels such as Mutual Fund do not identify whether a fund belongs in the broad Stock or Bond class. Select a conservative import default, then review every noncash holding whose classification matters to allocation or stochastic analysis.

Reconcile the saved account without the summary row

Return to Accounts & Holdings and compare the saved positions with the individual rows on the Schwab statement. Check the count, quantities, basis, and cash once; do not add the statement’s Positions Total as another holding.

Open Update Balances and confirm price coverage, manual values, and the final account balance. If an asset class is wrong, correct the classification and rerun affected analyses instead of assuming the import default was a recommendation.

The saved import is a dated starting point. Future account changes still require another reviewed update or supported price maintenance.

Schwab’s category labels are not full investment classifications

The CSV cannot reliably describe every fund’s exposure, bond cash flow, option contract, tax lot, fee, or trading restriction. YARCalc does not infer those details from a name or a broad Schwab category.

Use the statement and security documents for unresolved positions. The importer neither connects to Schwab nor changes the brokerage account.
