Accounts, holdings, and balances
Import holdings from Fidelity
Use a Fidelity Portfolio Positions CSV that may contain positions from several Fidelity accounts.
A Fidelity export can contain several accounts and several kinds of cash
The Fidelity importer is designed for a Portfolio Positions CSV downloaded from Fidelity. One file may contain brokerage, IRA, workplace, cash-management, and education accounts, so the job is not simply to upload it. You must map each source account to the correct YARCalc account and preserve the owner and tax treatment that make the balance meaningful.
The importer reads the file once, prepares account-by-account changes, and waits for a final reviewed save. It does not connect to Fidelity or keep the source account number as an ongoing credential.
Use the original positions file and stop if an account cannot be identified
Download the current Portfolio Positions CSV without editing its headers. Use the account name or masked ending digits to identify the source account. If two accounts cannot be distinguished, do not guess from the holdings; correct the destination records or enter the positions manually.
Taxable holdings require reliable total cost basis for the planning tax estimate. Exclude or correct a material taxable position whose basis is missing. For a partial import, use merge so unmatched existing holdings remain. Use replacement only when the selected rows represent the complete destination account.
Fidelity’s Type column is not a dependable broad asset-class answer. Review noncash classifications after import instead of assuming every mutual fund or ordinary security is stock.
Stage and reconcile one Fidelity account at a time
Choose the Fidelity file once, select one source account, and map it to the corresponding saved YARCalc account. Review security name, normalized symbol, quantity, market value, and total basis. Fidelity symbol annotations such as trailing double asterisks are removed, and recognized money-market or FDIC sweep cash is normalized as one-dollar cash units.
Select the valid rows, choose merge or replacement, and stage the account. Repeat for the other source accounts, then review all staged additions, updates, preserved holdings, and removals before choosing the single final save.
Exact symbol matches can retain YARCalc settings that are not in the export, including asset class, saved price treatment, and dividend assumptions. Confirm that those retained choices are still appropriate.
Compare each destination with its own Fidelity subtotal
Reopen Accounts & Holdings and compare the count, value, and total basis with the selected Fidelity account—not the total of the multi-account file. Confirm that sweep cash and symbol-less FDIC deposits appear once and that no taxable holding with unresolved basis was silently included.
Open Update Balances to review pending prices and asset classes. Fidelity 529 portfolio identifiers are not treated as authoritative public-market tickers; use a current statement value or unit price and a clear balance date.
If the account total reconciles but allocation looks wrong, correct the classifications rather than changing quantities or prices to force a result.
The export does not contain every fact needed for retirement modeling
The Fidelity file may not provide trustworthy asset class, tax-lot detail, basis, bond terms, option characteristics, or a usable public price identifier for every position. Importing the row does not validate those missing facts.
Keep the original statement as the authority and review unusual securities manually. The import changes only YARCalc; it does not place an order or alter the Fidelity account.
